Abu Dhabi Airports is set to revolutionize air travel with the launch of its biometric Smart Travel system at Zayed International Airport, marking a significant leap forward in enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency.
In collaboration with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (UAEICP) and AI specialist Next 50, this project is rolling out in three phases to integrate biometric authentication across key airport points. The advanced system promises to streamline travel by automating identity verification, thus eliminating the need for prior registration and reducing passenger processing time dramatically.
The new system, introduced in November 2023 alongside the terminal’s opening, features automated traveler registration, self-service baggage delivery, and facial recognition at e-gates and boarding gates. These enhancements are designed to minimize wait times and streamline the travel process from check-in to boarding.
Future expansions of the Smart Travel project will include biometric systems for additional airlines and new e-gates in transit areas, along with upgrades to the Etihad Airways lounge and duty-free retail outlets. These improvements are expected to further elevate the airport’s operational efficiency and passenger service.
By integrating biometric technology, Abu Dhabi Airports is not only advancing its operational capabilities but also supporting broader regional economic growth. The project is set to boost airline performance, reduce infrastructure expansion needs, and enhance fraud detection in travel documents.
This innovative approach underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to leading in aviation technology and improving global travel standards.
