As travelers continue to jet across the globe and check off their bucket-list destinations, more and more lesser-known places are taking center stage.

That’s the case for Mexico right now, as millions upon millions of tourists flock to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Los Cabos for their beach fix, which opens the door for others to take the spotlight.

Even as popular as Mexico is for vacations, not every destination is a household name.

In fact, some might be turned off by the sketchy reputation of the state where it is located.

Let’s be real – what’s the first thing you think of when you hear “Sinaloa”?

It’s probably not the beach.

Although, trigger words and travel advisories don’t seem to be deterring travelers from the most beautiful beach city of Sinaloa and locals find themselves torn between sharing their beloved paradise with the rest of the world and embracing the inevitable.

The numbers are the numbers, which, according to Skift, show a whopping 375% surge in vacation rental bookings in Mazatlan this spring.

The Safe Way To Explore Sinaloa

Mazatlan used to be a place for domestic travel – a local’s favorite escape, much like Ixtapa and Chetumal.

But the secret is slowly being let out in one of Mexico’s prettiest beach cities.

Despite what mainstream news and travel advisories may say about Sinaloa, have no fear, Mazatlan is here!

We recognize that Sinaloa has the highest designation – Level 4: Do Not Travel – but the U.S. State Department is not factoring Mazatlan into that equation, as tourists are largely considered to be safe.

If you stay within Mazatlan’s city limits, there is no need to over-stress about safety.

Since it is becoming more popular, you are more likely to run into like-minded travelers rather than feeling like you stick out like a sore thumb.

Digital Nomads Are Coming In Hot

When it comes to Mexico, there is more than enough gorgeous coastline for everyone.

And by everyone, we’re mainly talking about digital nomads looking for their next base.

As many Mexican beaches are surging in price, Mazatlan is surging in bookings.

While it’s not the cheapest beach getaway anymore, it’s certainly affordable enough for ‘nomads’ to make their temporary home.

With lightning-quick internet speeds, beautiful scenery, fun attractions, and ease of getting around with Uber and the city’s quirky Pulmonias, this beach city is undoubtedly a great place to stay long-term.

Not to toot our own horn, but we believe Mazatlan is such a seamless fit for digital nomads, we awarded this city as a top 10 destination in our first annual Best In Travel 2024 Awards.

After all, it’s rare to see a place this beautiful handle a spike in tourism while still holding on to its unique sense of real Mexico… at least for now.

Stunning Beaches And Luxury Stays

Skift’s latest report shined the light on vacation rentals, but surely many of Mazatlan’s tourists are staying in the ritzy beachfront hotels too.

Mazatlan’s beaches are incredible for a sun-soaked getaway, and it is even better to stay at a beachfront Airbnb or resort.

Many opt to stay in the city’s ‘Golden Zone’ (Zona Dorada) with swimmable beaches, luxurious hotels, and just a short drive to the historic Old Town district.

While perusing the scenic Malecon is another way to take in the sights, try leveling up even more by making the hike to the city’s highest viewpoint, El Faro.

Be sure to say hi to all the kitties!

Mazatlan Is Out Of This World This Spring

Perhaps the top reason for the crazy influx in bookings is none other than Mazatlan’s geography. No, it’s not just the gorgeous blue waters of Mazatlan that travelers are seeking.

Mazatlan just so happens to be lined up perfectly to bear witness to one of the year’s most sought-after natural phenomenons.

A solar eclipse is calculated to occur April 8th, and travelers are double-dipping for a fun beach vacation and bucket-list experience.

We’re not here to regurgitate what you didn’t pay attention to in science class, but it’s really cool to see the moon eclipse the sun, even if only for the roughly 4 minutes it’s predicted to be.
